With a year of exploration, friendship, learning and fun ahead of us, I am looking forward to our first days together at Beautiful Savior Lutheran School Kindergarten.
Reading books to your child about their beginning Kindergarten adventures is an excellent way to spark his/her imagination, begin a discussion, allay some of his/her fears, and demonstrate age-appropriate research an learning from reading! Little by little, books open a whole world to children!
Research shows that reading books aloud is the single most valuble support parents can provide in helping children learn to read (Priscilla Lynch, Ph.D., NYU) and I hope you might take some of the reading suggestions from our blog to add to your home-reading experience. Long after children have mastered independent reading, you and your child can enjoy special time together by reading to them aloud. Reading aloud to your child develops their vocabulary, increases their understanding of language through contextual cues, and sends them the message that you value reading as a lifelong skill that is not just limited to their schooldays.
I welcome your visit at the end of the school day (or feel free to sign up to be part of our Kindergarten volunteer schedule, if this is something you would enjoy), or send an e-mail or phone call if you have any questions in general about the Kindergarten curriculum and philosophy in general, or your child in particular. I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year.
