INTRAMURAL FORMS
A form was sent home from the office asking written permission from parents in order for your child to participate in the lunch gym time that Kindergarteners can participate during one lunch recess every second week. If you would like to know any more about the kinds of activities in which the children will engage, please contact our Phys. Ed. Teacher, Mr. Wozney, who is happy to provide more information.
GINGERBREAD HUNT
The children eagerly participated in the hunt for the Gingerbread Man, and we will continue to revisit this theme at various points through the school year. Several children requested copies of the recipe, which was enclosed in your child’s bookworm bag on Friday afternoon.
FIRE SAFETY
We had our first Fire Safety lesson, and practiced being “Fire Safety Experts” with our first (Kindergarten-only) walk-though of how to exit the school in case of fire, and the children gave excellent scenarios and solutions for exiting through alternate routes as well. A handout was sent home with your child to facilitate your discussion with them about exit plans and meeting places, and to minimize any anxiety he/she might have around the discussion of fire safety.
KINDERGARTEN SCHEDULE
We have been gradually moving to integrate our Kindergarten schedule of learning, play, music, phys. ed., snacks, and lunch to match that of the other classes in the school. One of the most important times for us is beginning our day together, and I am very appreciative that you have been bringing your child to school early enough to allow our morning routine to run smoothly. If you need to speak with me, I am happy to schedule a meeting, or have impromptu discussions anytime after I walk the Kindergarteners to After School Care and ensure those being picked up are with their parents.
If you notice that your child’s eating patterns aren’t back to “normal” in the coming weeks, please let me know and we can discuss strategies to assist him/her in developing the comfort/independence/focus/decision making/environmental changes necessary to assist them in this growth. Discussion about healthy eating, rest, and sleep habits are a natural inclusion of the Kindergarten curriculum, and usually benefit dramatically from discussions at home about taking care of our bodies by taking the time to give them the nutrition and fluid they need, listening to the body’s cues for using the toilet, and using our time at school with all our Kindergarten friends wisely to ensure we have enough energy to work and pay together!
The Kindergarteners have already made incredible progress in knowing their morning routine. Thank you for encouraging them to bring their lunch kit and bookworm bag into the classroom independently, and most of the children really enjoy showing parents how to do things in Kindergarten.
TERRY FOX WALK
On September 28th all of the students will go for a walk through the neighbourhood as part of the annual Terry Fox Walk, and we will be reading stories, watching a video, and finding out a bit more about this fundraiser to assist those affected by cancer. All children at BSLS were given “Tasks for Terry”, and the Kindergarteners traced their own hand on the task sheet so that they can do small kind, helpful things for you or others in their family, and ask that a coin be given to the child to tape to their sheet. Participation in this campaign is totally optional, and if you would like to emphasize the deeds each child can do to help others, then the name of the task the child did can be written on the fingers and thumb of their hand tracing, to be shared when they bring it back to school.
Hat Day is an additional fundraiser for those with cancer. Children are asked to bring a toonie on that day, and can wear any hat they wish to school and keep it on all day to bring attention to the campaign. If your child does not have a hat, please let me know, and I’m happy to ensure that all of the Kindergarteners can participate on that day. We also ask that your child wear their new school golf shirt on the day of the Terry Fox Walk.
