KINDERGARTEN CLASS STARS

Giving each of the Kindergarteners a chance to share more about their family traditions and their own personal preferences is one of the students’ favourite motivations for oral and written language development as well as math, reading, and social studies understandings. Attached is a proposed schedule that gives each of the children a day to shine as our class star. If this day just absolutely cannot work for your family once you have read the expectations and wishes outlined, please just let Mrs. Butterfield know at lbutterfield@bsls.ca and she will work to find something to ensure each child has an opportunity to be a star for the day. The night before your child’s day your child will receive Buddy Bear (a Canadian Black Bear) to bring home in his special bag with a journal page for the evening. Please ensure your child has an opportunity to illustrate about his adventures at your house (real or fictional) on the journal page. Buddy and his journal needs to return to school with your child the next day. Please see the next page for several other things your child is asked to bring on their Class Star day. What to bring for BSLS Kindergarten Class Star Day:  Their “All About Me” QUESTIONNAIRE (attached), completed together by you and your child for him/her to share with their classmates. This will be displayed in the classroom. The class will also have an opportunity to ask questions in an “interview” with the Class Star.  FIVE (OR LESS) PHOTOS of themselves and/or favorite people/pets. The photos will be returned to you in your child’s bookworm bag.  MYSTERY BAG! Please help your child come up with a favorite object and bring it to school in a brown grocery bag or lunch bag. We ask that you help your child come up with three clues to describe the object and attach them to the outside of the bag. Your child will share the clues, one by one, and see if their classmates can guess what's in the bag. They may also bring up to four other special items to show or play with their classmates during Choice Time on their specific Star Student Day.  COUNTING/ESTIMATING ITEMS! Please send a collection of small objects (blocks, pennies, individually wrapped candies, etc.) in a clear sandwich bag for our class counting/estimating jar. Their classmates will estimate how many objects there are, and then record the actual amount in class. The collection can be from 5-30 items depending upon size. The items will be returned home with your child.  A SPECIAL GUEST - Your child will have an opportunity to bring a special guest (mom, dad, grandparent, uncle, aunt, special friend, etc.). The guest can choose to share with the class: a family cultural tradition, a science experiment, a cooking activity, an arts and crafts activity, read a favorite book, something related to a specific current/former career that might be of interest to Kindergarteners, etc. Please send a note the week before to let me know what you or the guest would like to do or to let me know that you are unable to attend and I will plan something in its place. For scheduling convenience, the guest may share just before lunch (11:00 – 12:00) or during the last half hour of the school day (2:45 – 3:15), but we welcome them to stay with your child for the full half day if they are interested in doing so – just let me know in your note so we can ensure as much hands-on participation as possible for our guests! This is generally an exciting day and a very BUSY week prior for you and your child. The Kindergarteners benefit greatly, and I appreciate the extra effort and assistance required in making your child a "Super Star"! Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks again!! - Mrs. Lorianne Butterfield
