Safety
The Kindergarteners participated with a school-wide BSLS Fire Drill, and we anticipate there will be several more in the autumn weeks ahead. Our meeting spot and procedures were introduced to the children prior to the actual drill, and the students did very well at sticking together and going through the roll call. If your child has any extra questions or concerns about Fire Safety, please do not hesitate to let me know. We will be learning more during Fire Safety Week in early October. Also coming home will be a "Plan Your Route" form to assist with extending fire safety knowledge to the students' home.
Class Pet and Classroom Helpers
The introduction of our class pet, Blueberry the Betta Fish, after learning about voting (with clothespins, to ensure one vote per student), was the perfect opportunity to begin our Classroom Helper Roles. These include: "Zookeeper", Personal Assistants, Hosts, Table Supervisors, Floor Supervisors, Messengers, and Librarians. We will also be visiting occasionally with "Muffin" the guinea pig from Mrs. Petkau's classroom.
We had a visit from a remarkable Grove Snail, thanks to Mrs. Klein from the Nursery School, and hope to post photos of this creature to share with you at home.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
We have made our first forays into learning in the Technology Lab. On the Kindergarten website, the site that we are using currently (and will be regularly over the next few months) is the one at the bottom of the list, called "Great Games for Phonics Education". It is also possible to access it directly on your other devices at www.starfall.com, but I teach the Kindergarteners access to the school blog only for internet safety reasons. While it is a bit more complex to do it this way, once the students have the sequence worked out it is very effective for adding other educational sites to their repertoire as their skills increase. We also take turns with the Starfall app on the iPad in the classroom during Choice Time. The sounds we have introduced thus far are /s/, /a/, and /t/, so those are the games we are practicing most on Starfall. Those in the class who ready are also being encouraged in their use of known sounds in beginning written expression.
School Shirts
Your child received their new golf shirt in their bookworm bag. This shirt is theirs to keep to show their BSLS pride, and also are our uniform for special outings such as the Terry Fox Walk that we will be venturing out on as a whole student body on Friday afternoon. We will also ask that every student wear their school shirt on future special Kindergarten field trips.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child's progress, please contact me at 204-984-9600 x.5 or lbutterfield@bsls.ca.
