THURSDAY FUN EVENT
September and October have been full of fun birthdays in Kindergarten, and the celebrating will not slow down as we all gather for the Kindergarten Family Fun Event at Bowling!
LOST AND FOUND
Thank you for ensuring your children have all the necessary clothing for the constantly changing weather of late. The school Lost and Found is overflowing with items, and thus far we have hunted for a few stray mittens, but the Kindergarteners are assisting one another very well in tracking belongings. If you have a moment to check the leather benches in the hallway by the water fountain after drop-off or pick-up from school, it may prove fruitful if there are items your child is currently missing.
LEARNING FUN
We are progressing through the alphabet, and with the five sounds we have been working with (/s/, /a/,/t/, /i/ and /p/ the children have begun to manipulate them to "read" 12 (or more) words. For those children who were already decoding these words, their focus will be on the writing of these words, and some words with /st/ beginnings and endings.
PLAY AS WORK
I encourage all of the children to play with playdough during the school day, and at home as much as possible, and to use crayons to create amazing artwork, which are among the many fun activities that strengthen your child's fine motor development to make printing easier and more fun in the months and years to come!
PATTERNS
In addition to number recognition, counting, and "seubatizing" of smaller numbers, recognizing patterns and giving them their "letter names" has been a focus of our math work, and will continue to be integrated throughout our art, science, daily routine (calendar, schedules) and classroom movement and musical pursuits.
APPLES
A favourite Kindergarten activity is usually bringing apples to school, and while we will continue to learn about the life of trees over many months, we will be celebrating "Apple Day" next Monday, October 21st. Each child is asked to bring an apple (different colours make the learning very exciting for the children) and we will be making apple pie as well as doing a variety of floating, measuring and other activities. PLEASE SEND AN APPLE WITH YOUR CHILD ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 21st IN THEIR BOOKWORM BAG. Thanks for your support of our Kindergarten learning!
If you have anything you would like to discuss regarding our classroom learning, I look forward to opportunities to talk about your child's progress and achievements (984-9600 x.5 or lbutterfield@bsls.ca or after school any day this month).
Date to note: NO SCHOOL THIS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19th.
