CELEBRATE
YOUR CHILD’S LEARNING
at Student-led Conferences
On November 20th & 21st,
the students at BSLS will be leading their parent(s) through their learning
thus far this year, and for the Kindergarten students, this means bringing their
parents into their classroom (we ask that no younger or older siblings attend
this session to give the Kindergartener a chance to “shine”). The students will be presented as the “expert
on what happens in the Kindergarten classroom” so that they can operate as your
“tour guide” of 5 learning centres that will be set up on the tables, as well
as show you their work posted in the classroom and in their new binders. As you probably already noted on the sign-ups
posted, there may be a few K students in the room at the same time, so if you
have specific questions for me regarding your child’s progress, or concerns you
would like to share, please e-mail me or talk to me to ask for an appointment
after the 21st so that we can speak individually and in confidence. Please
don’t worry if you are out of town on the 20th & 21st,
as I will be certain to offer an alternate date at the end of November for follow-up
student-led conferences to ensure no Kindergartener misses this important
opportunity to celebrate the people, procedures and information they have come
to know at school thus far.
Pumpkin Day Recap
After
scooping and carving our pumpkin in the morning, playing pumpkin Bingo, pumpkin
play clay, pumpkin patterning, and writing/drawing, the children and staff
changed into costumes after the lunch recess.
We then went on a costume parade through each of the classrooms, had a
quick treat, then did pumpkin bowling, beanbag toss, stories and Choice. Photos of small groups of the students in
costume will be up for viewing during student-led visits to our classroom in
two weeks.
Remembrance Day Service Thursday,
November 8th
To
commemorate Remembrance Day, a date upon
which the students will not be at school, the entire school will be taking part
in a service on Thursday at 11 a.m. (Chapel will be as usual on Wednesday at 9
a.m.).
Batty for You
Kindergarteners have been watching Stellaluna in 10 - 15 minute-sessions
after lunch over a period of 3 school
days. We have also shared some National Geographic information
about bats that was discovered by a K student in our class library, learned
about fruit bats, made bat art, learned
about a few different types of nocturnal animals, and had some fascinating discussions
about different types of forest-dwelling animals.
Our
next theme-unit will be Colours, which
was kicked off with hands-on spectrum art, the story Mouse Paint and playing “Lucky Foot” to practice saying colour
words in French.
We
began the process for Guided Reading Groups this week, which will continue as
part of our Centre activities throughout the year. The books that the children read, and the
related writing that they may be doing, will be expanded throughout the year. Our main focus at this point is the basic
mechanics of reading, sharing fun, repetitive-text books with peers, having the
children view themselves as readers, and to learn a variety of strategies that
good readers use, including phonetic knowledge.
